Adelaide boot – a ladies side laced ankle boot, named after Queen Adelaide, wife of William IV.
Blakeys – see segs.
eversion (of the foot) – rotation of the foot as it contacts the ground during walking, to make the inside of the foot press on the ground harder than the outside. Eversion has an association with pronation.
inseam – refers to the welt-sewing of a Goodyear-welted shoe.
inversion (of the foot) – opposite of eversion, making the outside of the foot contact the ground first during walking.
lasting-pincers – see pincers –1.
Manchester nippers – specially designed pliers (approx. 300mm in length) for cutting off tacks that are found protruding above the surface of the insole inside a shoe, after the shoe has been made.
Munson last – a last model (shape) adopted and used for US military boots from around 1917.
pincers – 1 as in hand-pincers or lasting-pincers, a tool for lasting uppers by hand: - 2 the pincer-jaws that grip the upper in a lasting machine.
segs – (to replace existing entry.) small cast iron shoe ‘protectors’ marketed under the brand-name ‘Blakey’ by Pennine Castings Ltd.. Often referred to as ‘blakeys’, they are hammered onto soles and heels to extend the wear-life.
shell forme – a forme created by a material that is shaped or moulded to the surface of the last, thus requiring skill in the flattening process when removed from the last: (as opposed to – say – a slotted paper forme where the skill is in the distortion to position it on the last, as it becomes flat immediately it is removed from the last.) slotted forme – or slotted paper forme, a flat piece of paper that is ‘slotted’ to enable it to be shaped to the last: (this requires skill in fitting it to the last – it flattens immediately it is removed from the last). See forme and shell-forme.
